Oh please! That’s the word that I kept saying when watching this movie. I assume that a lot of people already know the main theme of 2012 the movie, even before wathing it. Yes, it is about the end of the world. In summary, just like predicted by the Mayans a thousand years ago, the world will end in the year 2012, or to be exact, December 12th 2012.
Just like other doomsday movies, we can safely assume that this movie will use a lot of special effects, both sound effects and visual effects. And you are correct, you will not be disappointed by the abundant special effects in this movie. The special effects is so much, that I have to draw a conclusion that this movie is a special effect movie about doomsday, and not a doomsday movie with special effects
What’s the difference? Well, of course there is, because putting the special effects aside, then this movie is really nothing.
For those of you that hope there will be an interesting story with the doomsday in the background, you will be disappointed. Just like us. Well, there is a “side” story in this movie about a family trying to survive, plus a “main” story about humankind survival. But believe me, the stories have a lot of impossibilities, even more impossible than the doomsday theme itself (which is nonsense enough).
I can give you a few examples. Not much, not to annoy you when you’re watching the movie (if you still decide to watch). First, you will see a book writer cum limousine driver so strong and heroic that he become the central point of his family survival and the survival of 100,000 US citizens in a ship. With all due respect to book writers and limousine drivers, but I give more trust to a technician in my car service center to handle the hydraulics of a giant door that got stuck because of cables and some technical tools. Second, the runaway scene with a limousine through a collapsing city. Third, a runaway scene with a small plane from a collapsing city AND a hot air stream from a mega-volcano. Fourth, a runaway scene with a Russian cargo plane, also from a collapsing city AND a hot air stream from a mega-volcano. See the pattern here? The core theme of this movie is about “running away”. Fifth, the “ark” allocation that put Russia and China in the same ship, while US in the other ship. In the rank of world’s most populous countries, they put the most populous (China) and the ninth (Russia) in one ship, with the third in one other ship, while we missed India (the second) and Indonesia (the fourth)? I put more credit on lumping all European countries in the same ship
So, the conclusion: if you only want to see special effects, or if you’re just simply curious about this movie, then yes, please watch it. But if you are looking for a movie with an interesting story, skip this one. You’ve been warned!
