Surrogates

image It’s quite rare to find a movie that make us think about life and living. And Surrogates is one of them. After watching this movie, we are forced to think, what does it mean to be human, and about life. With technology progress, this movie showed a possibility: what if we don’t have to go out of our home, and we can be “represented” by a robot, which in this movie is called “surrogate”. Does it mean that our “life” can be represented by the surrogate? Well, in this movie, US Supreme Court ruled that yes, legally, we can represented by our surrogates. But what if we raise that same question to ourselves?

Do we realize that our life right now is full of our surrogates representing us? Aren’t we represented by our Yahoo ID, Live ID, or whatever ID that we have? Aren’t we kind of “hiding” behind our IDs? What is the last time we go to an online forum and use an ID that really shows our real name? Or perhaps we intentionally create “fake” IDs that represented us?

On top of it, you can add online games, MMORPG like Ultime Online, Ayo Dance, Ragnarok, where we are represented by our avatars? Isn’t it true that people playing the game don’t have to leave their home and “represented” by their avatar? Not to mention quasi-games like Second Life that give “online life”. And just like in the movie, when is the last time we heard about a man who “guised” as a woman, or vice versa, in online world? It’s not new, is it?

Like always, to make this movie interesting, the movie maker intentionally removed several details which in the end is a bit annoying. For example, do children got surrogates? If yes, are they legally bind to use children-size surrogates? What about “procreation”? (you know what I mean). How about aging process? And if everyone is represented by their surrogates and just lie down at home all day long, aren’t they supposed to have problems with their bones and muscles for prolonged inactivity?

Anyway, this movie is highly recommended to watch. Serious movie, with a lot of actions. And the most important thing, this movie make us think: what is the meaning of life?
