The long awaited movie, we finally able to watch it at Blitzmegaplex Pacific Place. Not really an extraordinary movie, but a good movie indeed, both from the storyline and special effects. Interesting to know that Eva, who have never liked Star Trek, also say that it is a good movie. Which means, the movie successfully met it’s objective: to restart the Star Trek franchise for those that have never seen Star Trek.
The storyline is interesting indeed. For people like me who have watched all Star Trek episodes, there are no odd things that I can complain about. On the other hand, people like Eva who have never or rarely watch Star Trek, they are immersed into Star Trek universe slowly, just like other Sci-fi movies. The movie even introduced a well know Star Trek technology like transport only in the middle of the movie.
One of my major complaints is the Indonesian subtitle. I don’t know whether it is a deliberate decision, or the translator is really know nothing about Star Trek universe. A lot of Star Trek “technology” that got translated into Indonesian, which will create confusion to Star Trek fans, such as “warp drive” translated to “mesin lompatan” (jump machine) or sometimes “lompatan waktu” (time jump), “Starfleet” becoming “Armada Bintang” (literally means Star Fleet). In my opinion, such common words for Star Trek fans shouldn’t be translated. Non-fans will not know the difference anyway.
The most extraordinary thing about this movie is the storyline. With the objective to restart the Star Trek franchise, the scenario writer smartly build a story which is based on the “standard” Star Trek story, but at the same time, enables a “rewrite” of the entire Star Trek story. This enables the next movies to be “free” from fear of colliding with the Star Trek established story. I can’t describe a lot here without spoiling the plot
But indeed, things like the destruction of one of the primary planet in Federation, love story between members of Enterprise, Kirk’s career line which is totally different from the original, etc. will make the storyline for the next movies will be very “open” and will not follow any existing established Star Trek story. The result, both Star Trek fans and common moviegoers will always wait for the next sequel of this movie.
My recommendation? Highly recommended!
