The Reader

image Amazing! That’s all we can think of when watching The Reader movie. This is an example of a movie with a very deep theme, and of course, a bit controversial. Indeed, things about Nazi is very sensitive, especially if we talk about the main topic of systematic killing of Jews in Europe at that time. This film talks a lot of things at one time, but not only skin-deep.

The first topic is about the law itself. Just like what mentioned by the law professor to his students: law is not about right or wrong, but about legal and illegal. And for a very old case, we have to use the applicable laws at that time, not the one that we have right now, because law is not applicable backwards. This is controversial enough for common people who doesn’t understand laws. That’s why, in this Nazi context, it is difficult to prove because we need to find the “intent”: whether a certain action is intended to kill.

The second topic is about “knowing something that can free someone from punishment”. When the young man (Michael) realized an information (not mentioned here to avoid spoiling the plot :-) ) which can release the woman (Hanna) from all accounts, he faced a deep dilemma, because the woman herself intentionally lie to hide that information.

The third topic is about the controversial love affair, with an age gap of more than 20 years. This love story is the main theme of this movie, with other topics to create the scene.

Another interesting point from this movie is how someone can learn how to read and write just by hearing a recorded tape and compare it with the real book. I don’t know, maybe this is happening elsewhere, but I really never heard of something like this before.

Last but not least, I totally agree of Oscar for Kate Winslet for her appearance in this movie. Her acting is extraordinary!
