Joan had a high fever before, so we asked a lot of questions to the doctor about the treatment. The following are a few things that we can do.
First, if the fever is between 37.5 C and 39 C, the fever can be handled by giving normal fever medication, like Tempra. Please read the instructions carefully. For Tempra, the medicine can be given every 4 hours, maximum of 5 times. The dosage is 1 cc per 10 kg body weight.
Second, use warm water to reduce the child’s temperature. Doctors nowadays does not recomend the use of cold water. The purpose of hot water is to “trick” the body to think that the wheather is hot, and enforce the skin to produce sweat. In the end, the body temperature will drop.
Third, make the child sweat. Other then using hot water, we can use other means. For houses without AC or with warm temperature, do not use a blanket. Use thin and flexible clothing so the body heat can escape. For houses with AC or with cold temperature, cover the child with blanket.
Fourth, if the temperature is more than 39 C, bring the child to the doctor as soon as possible. Our doctor give a rectal medicine that can reduce the temperature fast, but work only in a short period. Afterwards, we have to bring the child to the doctor.
Fifth, because the child will sweat a lot, change the clothes ofthen. Give a lot of fluid so the child can sweat and urinate often.
